A decline by – 1.2% compared to March 2016 is surely not a reason for getting euphoric but at least this is a better result for True Fleets in France than in the first two months of 2017. It’s fair to say that the first quarter was challenging for fleets with a drop of 6.7% while the passenger car registrations on private households increased by 3.1% in Q1 (+ 3.6% in March).
In March, Renault was number one in True Fleets for the 14th month in a row followed by Peugeot, Citroën, Volkswagen and Audi. Mercedes jumped from rank number nine into sixth position with a remarkable growth of 32.5% mainly fuelled by the performance of GLC-, B- and A Class. Ford (seventh, + 6.5%) achieved its highest market share since June 2012, especially due to increasing registrations of their SUV models Kuga, Ecosport and Edge and the Transit Custom van with passenger car registration.
Comparing different True Fleet Markets across Europe it is eye-catching that in France the share of the Small Car segment is the highest behind Denmark; a fleet market which is fairly small (around 20% of the French one) and very much influenced by a really high taxation on company cars. With 23.8% the French Small Car share is 2.7 times higher than in Germany (8.8%) and significantly higher than the respective shares in the UK, Spain or Italy.
Let’s have a closer look: the segment is pretty much dominated by the “Big 3”. Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 along with its predecessors and Citroen C3 have been in the lead for many years now and for March currently represent more than 70% of their segment. Toyota Yaris in fourth place is the first foreign competitor at the moment followed by the fully electric Zoe from Renault. Similar to Premium rivals like Mini or Audi A1 the Zoe is ranking higher in fleets than in the Private Market. The very reverse can be seen with Dacia Sandero as the Private customers’ most preferred small car only ranks 15th in True Fleet.
