True Fleet Market France raises its game for the 7th time in a row

Roma, 13.12.17

After a truly remarkable October with the highest growth rate in 17 months the French True Fleet Market was able to grow once again in November. With a + 14.0% the rate was lower than a month ago but nevertheless the third highest in 2017. In addition, the performance of company cars was in much better shape than the Private Market’s not only in November (+ 14.0% vs. + 7.8%) but also for the year-to-date period. From January to November new car registrations on True Fleets rose by + 7.7% while the Private Market “only” grew by 3.0%. Thanks to a solid plus of 5.3% the total passenger car market surpassed 1.9 million, which was the highest volume November YTD (year-to-date) since 2011 and we expect registrations to hit 2.1 million in December.

Brand performance

Peugeot was again the clear market leader in True Fleets representing a share of 27.4%. With more than 12,000 units the French manufacturer outmatched the record volume from last month and even achieved its highest market share ever! In terms of increase by absolute figures the overall ranking across all brands was led by two Peugeot SUV models, the 3008 and the 5008.

Renault in second place and Citroen as third had a successful month as well with growth rates of + 7.6% and + 12.7% respectively while Volkswagen in fourth position missed it’s result from November 2016 by only 9 registrations.

Outside the Top 10 three brands are certainly worthy of a mention. Skoda (ranking 13th with + 31.3%) and Mini (14th, + 47.5%) both showed remarkable results. A bit further down the ranking Kia managed to take the 20th place with an excellent increase of + 50.9% over November 2016. The main driver for the Korean brand was the Picanto which jumped into 9th place in the Mini car segment, but the Rio, Niro and the new Stonic also contributed significantly to the brand’s excellent performance.

Middle Class under the microscope

At first glance the Middle Class segment doesn’t seem to be very appealing for a deeper analysis given a drop of 28.2% in a market growing by + 14.0% at the same time. But we think it makes sense to take a closer look as some of the protagonists are performing pretty well. While the Top 5 in the segment are currently all lagging behind their previous year’s volume, the Ford Mondeo in 6th position achieved its best share in more than nine years (May 2008 to be precise).

Another example is Opel’s Insignia which scored its highest market share of the last 18 months with the second generation – Insignia B – currently being very well received by fleet consumers. As shown in the Top 10 ranking above, there are further models with a positive trend and Skoda Superb (+ 25.0%, from 9th into 8th position) or Audi A5, S5 (+ 56.6%, from 12 to 9) were notable for their growth percentages.
